NHS Work Days

Silver Lake Clean-up Day
This is a rain or shine event!
Saturday, Sept, 27
This is an urgent call for volunteers!

  • Why are we doing a workday at Silver Lake on Saturday?
    • Click Here for an email sent previously on the need to support the Park Authority at this workday.  (The link will take you to a stored message on the NHS Yahoo Group site.
  • Where is Silver Lake?
    • 5600 Antioch Rd, Haymarket, VA (Click on Link for Google Maps)
    • If you don't do Google Maps ...
      • From Rt. 15 in Haymarket (at the Sheetz), take Rt. 55 (John Marshal Hwy), west, towards Broad Run.
      • Go about 9/10ths of a mile down Rt. 55
      • Turn right onto Antioch Rd
      • Go about 1.3 miles.  You will see the entrance to Silver Lake on the right.  There will be a chain link fence gate at the entrance.
  • Where are we meeting at the property?
    • The old green camp store on the north side of the lake.  Follow the entrance road around past the lake until you see the old store.
  • What are the times for the work day?
    • Come out anytime between 9am - 2pm
    • Work as little or as long as your schedule permits.
  • Should people bring their own refreshments?
    • The Park Authority will provide water
  • What will we be doing?
    • Our focus will be on cleaning up and removing debris on the old campsite on the north side of the lake.
  • What “tools” can folks bring?
    • Work gloves
    • If available, bring pry bars, hammers and other hand tools.
    • The Park Authority will have loppers, pole saws and we will not be using any power equipment if we can prevent it
  • Will any bigger “tools” or equipment be needed?
    • The Park Authority will have a chipper, trucks, roll-off dumpsters etc
    • A tractor or two may be helpful for work around the camp site area and maybe around the entrance.  If you have a tractor to bring with you please contact me directly to coordinate activity.  Call me at 703-402-3726 or email at jeffshoup@comcast.net
  • What will happen if it is raining on Saturday?
    • From:"Nugent, Barbara" bnugent@PWCParks.org
      • For posting purposes: a "decision" about the clean-up at Silver Lake will be made by the Park Authority no later than 7:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.  Unless there is a ongoing deluge we will likely proceed with the clean-up even if it is raining.  Bring rain gear.  I know the forecast is calling for a couple of inches of rain over the next few days and hopefully we'll still be able to make a dent at Silver Lake.  If a decision is made to reschedule due to heavy rains, a message will be posted on the PWC Parks website (www.pwcparks.org) shortly after 7:00 a.m. on Saturday.  If the workday is postponed it will be rescheduled to October 4, same time, same place.
      • We will try to cross post any cancellation notice on the NHS site at www.NokesvilleHorseSociety.org

Nokesville Equestrian Park Fence Building
Date/Time (to be announced)

The remnants of an old fence separating the equestrian ring area and the entrance road at Nokesville Park were removed by the utility company when new utility lines were installed some time ago.  Since then, the NHS has acquired fencing materials through a donation to the NHS from the No. VA Coalition of Equestrian Organizations, of which the NHS is a member organization.  Phase 1 was installation of the fence posts, which occurred in May.  The next phase will be the installation of the fence boards.  If you are interested in helping with this project contact Cleve Benton, NHS Trails Development Director.  Date and time is TBA.
