NHS Work Days

Silver Lake Clean-up Days
These are rain or shine events!
August 22 & August 29
This is an urgent call for volunteers!

  • Why are we doing a workdays at Silver Lake?
    • Finally after many years of debate and delays, the Silver Lake property has been transferred to the Prince William County Park Authority (PA).  Click Here for an announcement from Supervisor John Stirrup regarding the future of Silver Lake.
    • The PA, with the help of the NHS and the general public, would like to get the potential trails identified, developed and open to the public as soon as possible.  But first, much of the neglected clean up must take place.  Old deteriorated infrastructure must be demolished and removed for safety reasons before the property can be open to the public for trail riding and other uses.
  • Where is Silver Lake?
    • 5600 Antioch Rd, Haymarket, VA (Click here for a link to Google Maps)
    • If you don't do Google Maps ...
      • From Rt. 15 in Haymarket (at the Sheetz), take Rt. 55 (John Marshal Hwy), west, towards Broad Run.
      • Go about 9/10ths of a mile down Rt. 55
      • Turn right onto Antioch Rd
      • Go about 1.3 miles.  You will see the entrance to Silver Lake on the right.  There will be a chain link fence gate at the entrance.
  • Where are we meeting at the property?
    • TBA
  • What are the times for the work day?
    • Tentative: Come out anytime between 9am - 2pm
    • Work as little or as long as your schedule permits.
  • Should people bring their own refreshments?
    • The Park Authority will provide water.  Please provide your own snacks and luches.
  • What will we be doing?
    • Our focus will be on cleaning up and removing debris at various locations on the property
  • What “tools” can folks bring?
    • Work gloves
    • If available, bring pry bars, hammers and other hand tools.
    • The Park Authority will have loppers, pole saws and we will not be using any power equipment if we can prevent it
  • Will any bigger “tools” or equipment be needed?
    • The Park Authority will have a chipper, trucks, roll-off dumpsters etc
    • A tractor or two may be helpful for work around the camp site area and maybe around the entrance.  If you have a tractor to bring with you please contact NHS Trail Development Director, Cleve Benton, at clevebenton@yahoo.com or 703-400-8446 to coordinate activity.
  • What will happen if it is raining on the day of the work days?
    • A message will be posted on the NHS website home page with additional directions or contact Cleve directly.
